I've paid healthcare costs abroad. How do I get a refund?

You have an EHIC and have incurred costs that are covered by EHIC care. It happens that healthcare providers abroad (e.g. a doctor or pharmacy) do not accept an EHIC. You will then have to pay directly to the healthcare provider. In that case you can claim back the costs from us. Please use the form Declaration costs of medical care of a treaty-entitled person (7-10-2021, pdf, 935 kB).

Which documents do I need to enclose?

Enclose the following documents with your claim.

  • The original invoices you paid.
  • Referrals and/or prescriptions from the doctor.

Which costs can I not claim from the CAK?

You can only claim costs from us that you have incurred in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland or the United Kingdom. In all other situations the following applies:

  • Costs incurred by your family members in all other countries you can possibly claim from the health insurance fund in their country of residence or from your travel insurer.
  • Any costs your family members incur in their country of residence you need to claim from the health insurance fund in that country.
  • Costs incurred while you are on holiday on a cruise ship are private healthcare costs. You may be able to claim these from your travel insurer.

Please note

Do you have health insurance in the Netherlands? Apply before departure for a form 111 if your co-insured family members at the CAK live in other treaty countries such as Turkey. 

Have your family members still had to pay their own medical expenses? You can claim those costs from the CAK. The CAK lets you know whether these costs will still be refunded or whether you still have to pay them (partly) yourself.
