Germany
Are you planning to emigrate to Germany or are you already living there? And will you be covered by health insurance through the CAK? This page provides information about your health insurance in Germany.
Health insurer/agency
After registering with the CAK, you will receive an S1 form. Submit this form to a Krankenkasse of choice.
Reimbursements
In Germany
- Basic package: includes GP, hospital, and medication. Please note: the healthcare provider must be affiliated with the Krankenkasse.
- You are only entitled to care in kind (Sachleistungen) from the statutory Krankenversicherung and Pflegeversicherung.
- You are not entitled to care allowance (Geldleistung). See: Meine Pflegeversicherung bei Wohnort in Deutschland.
- If you find the reimbursements too low, you can take out supplementary insurance (Zusatzversicherung) with the Krankenkasse.
- More information on reimbursements: Krankenkassen Deutschland.
In the Netherlands
- Basic package: includes GP, hospital, and medication; see the Zilveren Kruis website.
- No personal contribution or deductible.
- On presentation of the EHIC from the CAK.
In another treaty country
- Medisch noodzakelijke zorg (zorg die niet kan wachten tot u weer thuis bent).
- You must present your EHIC from the CAK.
Tip: always take out travel or supplementary insurance as well.
What do you pay?
- A healthcare contribution to the CAK . Calculate your treaty contribution with the CAK - Healthcare Contribution Calculator (in Dutch). We deduct this contribution monthly from your pension(s) or benefits.
- Personal contribution for certain medical care in Germany.
- Supplementary insurance (hospitalization insurance) is at your own expense.
Tip
- Apply for healthcare benefits from the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration.
- Are you a taxpayer in your country of residence? In some countries, you can deduct your healthcare contribution. Contact the tax authorities in your country of residence to discuss the options.
We compile this information with care. However, the rules are complex and change from time to time. Therefore, always check with the authorities in Germany to find out which rules apply to you.

Your family members (partner, children) without their own income who live in Belgium are eligible for co-insurance. However, the Krankenkasse must approve this.
Please note: You can only insure a partner if you are married or have a registered partnership.
