Health insurance abroad

You do not live in the Netherlands, but you do have a pension or benefit from the Netherlands. In that case, the Netherlands will sometimes remain responsible for your healthcare costs. This has been agreed with a number of countries. You will then arrange your health insurance through the CAK. These arrangements also apply to family members of cross-border workers working in the Netherlands.

Health insurance through the CAK is no ordinary health insurance. The Netherlands is bound by international treaties to pay the costs of medical care for certain groups of people who live outside the Netherlands and are not insured here. The formal term for this is ‘Treaty law’. The right to care is based on a treaty and not on real insurance. For Dutch treaty beneficiaries, the CAK is the executor of this special scheme. We provide the necessary documents to prove the law abroad. In addition, we are responsible for levying the contribution due that is linked to treaty law.
